While on the phone with my sister and she whispered these beautiful words as she was hanging up to hang out with her husband ” Love is Patient, Love is Kind.” This is when it hit me. These famous words from the Bible are read for weddings and you can even find it on kitchen and bedroom accessories at tj maxx or marshalls. But do we really know what these words really mean?
As I was falling asleep, I couldn’t stop thinking of these words.
I know they are found in the Bible and I know the context of them but something clicked at 3am as I woke up from my sleep. If LOVE is patient and LOVE is kind , and God is love, then that means that GOD IS PATIENT AND GOD IS KIND.
You wouldn’t believe the way I felt when I realized this. Be sure that all I could do was thank God that he is patient and that HE is kind with us. Obviously, don’t think that I didn’t know that those two are qualities God truly has/is.
But for me in this moment, I realized that if I want to love others how I am graced to so do, then I need to be patient and I need to be kind. So when do I have to do this? I can do this when I am hurt, when something goes way different than what I expected. I can do this when my husband couldn’t finish a task and instead of mocking him I kindly ask what happened? I can do this while my boyfriend shares with me his frustrations and instead of making about me , help him process his emotions. I can display this love and kindness when my husband hasn’t washed the dishes for 2 weeks.I can even display it to my own self.
You get the idea. YES, this is incredibly hard because who wants to make life about others ? But honestly, who are we not to extend that love and that kindness that is displayed to us by God. Trust me, we don’t deserve it.
So friend who is reading this, are you being loving and kind to yourself, to others?
The Excellence of Love
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 4 Love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not arrogant. 5 It does not act disgracefully, it does not seek its own benefit; it is not provoked, does not keep an account of a wrong suffered, 6 it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 it keeps every confidence, it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
